Concrete Driveway and Patio Questions, Answered

Questions

Answers to common questions

How much does a new concrete driveway cost?

Typical U.S. prices run from about $6 to $15 per square foot, and more for decorative finishes. Know the price drivers: size, thickness, base prep, reinforcement, finish and removal of an old slab. Access and local rates matter too. Prices vary by job, so compare written quotes from a few providers in our network before you decide.

What makes stamped concrete cost more than plain concrete?

Stamped concrete adds color, pattern tools and extra labor, so it often runs several dollars more per square foot than a broom finish. Skilled finishing is the big factor. Sealing adds cost too. Ask each provider to list the pattern, color and sealer in the quote so you can compare the same scope side by side.

What time of year works well for pouring concrete in a humid, stormy climate?

Many homeowners aim for the drier months, since almost daily summer storms can interrupt a pour and hurricane season runs from June to November. Fresh concrete needs a few dry hours to set its surface. Plan before the pour, ask providers how they handle rain delays, and expect busy calendars in the calmer months.

How long before I can drive on a new concrete driveway?

Concrete gains strength over days and weeks. Many providers advise keeping foot traffic off for about a day and cars off for roughly a week, with full strength near 28 days. Heavy trucks may need longer. Hot, humid weather can change the timeline, so follow the instructions your provider gives you for your own slab.

How thick should a driveway or patio slab be?

A residential driveway is commonly poured about 4 inches thick, and some providers go thicker or add reinforcement for heavy vehicles. Patios are often 4 inches too. Soil, base prep and drainage matter as much as thickness. Ask each provider what thickness, base and reinforcement are in the written quote.

How can I prevent cracks and surface damage?

Good base prep, proper joints, correct curing and sealing all help. Control joints guide where cracks form. Keep water draining away from the slab and avoid harsh chemicals early on. Some minor hairline cracking can be normal. Ask providers how they plan to handle joints and curing.

Is concrete safe to walk on when it is wet or slick?

A smooth finish can get slippery when wet, which matters with frequent rain. Many providers offer a broom or textured finish for better grip, and some sealers add traction. Mention pool decks, slopes and steps when you request an estimate so the finish fits the way you use the space.

How do I choose a provider and compare quotes?

Ask for at least three written quotes that list the same size, thickness, base, finish and cleanup. Check that the provider holds any license your area requires and carries insurance, and ask for it in writing. Be careful with very low bids that skip prep.
